Getting seen in 2019

Promoting your company and your website has changed a lot over the years, but it’s also hardly changed at all. The methods used to promote your website have evolved, as have the tools available to us, but the same principles are there.

Back in the day (talking 1995 here, before some of our team were even born (gees I feel old now)) we would plough a website with keywords and before long a top search engine (Google is not around yet remember) was yours. You would enjoy that ranking until a competitor did exactly the same as you, but pumping even more keywords in to their website.

A few well targeted (and keyword filled) pages later and you had the top spot back, with this toing and froing being commonplace. It was actually quite good fun gaining the top ranking and setting an alert to inform you when you began to slip.

Fast forward to 2019, of course many of those old techniques will see your website being banned from search engines (many ‘SEO experts’ still use them however) the principles are roughly the same.

Google and other search engines want to see relevant content on your website, we can no longer just fill a page with keywords, instead the content has to be written for the user with the keyword taking up around 1-3% of your total word count. So if your keyword is for example ‘website design’ and your page contains 100 words (for simplicity sake) the words ‘website design’ shouldn’t be repeated more than 3 times.

We are doing roughly the same thing as in 1995, but much more considered and of benefit to the end user. A page full of keywords repeated over and over again (often hidden on the page some how) might have been awesome for search engines but pretty useless for a visitor.

A great way to get keywords on to your website is via a blog post or news article. Choose a subject to write about, such as ‘Getting seen in 2019’ 🙂 choose your keywords for the page and write about it. Search engines will find this new page on your website and rank it, giving you more chance of being seen.

Of course there is a heck of a lot more to getting seen in 2019, the big one being through the use of social media, but this post is rather long already so that’s for another time. Keep a look out for it…
